Rain was originally a classic twin guitar rock band based in the Wrexham area and although they'd been quiet as a unit for 14 years or so, the original band was formed over 27 years ago in 1982. The band's music was influenced by the likes of AC-DC, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Status Quo, Free, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and Queen.
Rain mark 1 was originally formed in the early eighties with founder members: Bill Hughes (Vocals), Paul Lambert Lead Guitar), Barrie Roberts (Drums), Nick Mattocks (Lead Guitar) and Dennis Burkhill (Bass). The band originally enjoyed playing a mixure of classic rock original and cover material together between 1982 and 1989, with the first line-up change in 1986 when Dennis and Nick left and Gareth Parsonage (Bass) and John Vaughan (Lead Guitar) replaced them, and the second line-up change in 1988; when John Vaughan left and Ray McAllister (Lead Guitar) later of Vinegar Strokes replaced him.
When, in 2004 Rain was asked to reform for a one-off charity event in aid of Alder Hey hospital, they found the 'spark' was still there and decided to carry on as a Rain mark 4 line-up including Bill Hughes (Vocals), Barrie Roberts (Drums), Nick Mattocks (Lead Guitar) - all from Rain mark 1, Gareth Parsonage (Bass) from Rain mark 2, Rain new boy Paul 'PJ' Davies from Seedy-DC/The Shining and various other rock blues bands from the Wrexham area, and the excellent rich tones of Gavin Rawlinson who had previously fronted bands like Tiger Rose, Stranger Than Fiction, Saraband and latterly Rothschild on lead vocals. James Barber joined the band in 2005, replacing Gareth on bass guitar. At the end of 2007 after fulfilling all current commitments, Nick and Barrie left Rain and were replaced by Tim Nicholls (Drums) and Alan Flitcroft (Lead Guitar) from the beginning of 2008. |
Rain was always known in the North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and Shropshire regions for putting on a good show underpinned by classic rock tunes from the 70's, 80's, 90's and the noughties. The band had their own unique sound as well as being very able to closely mimic the sound of those classic guitar based rock bands that once dominated and still dominate the world of rock music. The current line-up of RAIN continues to live up to the standards that were set the first time round in the eighties. |
AND THEN THERE WAS ONE: Now in 2009, Rain has one original member left: Bill 'Billy' Hughes who continues to front the current band.
AND THE REST: Dennis Burkhill has retired from playing music. Paul Lambert is still a fantastic guitar player and good guy and is still writing and recording some great music. John Vaughan lives in Norway. Amongst various other active projects, other former members of Rain: Gavin, Barrie, Nick and Gareth have now teamed up with Kev who also plays guitar with local band Thunderpig to reform nineties band ROTHSCHILD with whom Gavin, Gareth and Nick all played between 1993 and 1998.
A BIT ABOUT ROTHSCHILD:
Rothschild is a solid classic twin lead harmony guitar band and presents a range of varied original material and covers in the classic vein of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Bad Company, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Billy Idol, Foo Fighters, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin and up-to-date artists.
The excellent vocal talents of Gavin Rawlinson are the icing on the cake and he has been favourably compared to Ian Gillan, David Coverdale, Phil Lynott, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul Rodgers and others of equal note.
The band have already attracted some attention from promoters and after only a very short time already have a few gigs lined up for the summer 2009, which will be shortly supplemented by more.
Rothschild always were and will continue to be a very good live band who were and are still primarily interested in enjoying writing, recording and playing good music in very much the same way as they did during the nineties. Rothschild look forward to seeing you soon at some of their gigs.
